HERON is celebrating our longest running community partnership with the Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies (IWES) and in celebration of their 25th year of serving communities, we’re supporting IWES in their fundraising efforts. If you’d like to make a donation, please see here.
The Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies (IWES) is an internationally recognised non-profit community based public health organisation, founded by Dr Denese Shervington in 1993 and based in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Many people of color and their families in the Greater New Orleans area do not have access to programs that address their full mental, emotional and physical health. Because of this, IWES works with communities, schools, individuals and organizations to provide tailored health and wellness services that address this lack of health options and access. IWES combines advocacy, health education, research and direct services to improve wellness in local communities. IWES provides mental health and substance use counselling, comprehensive sexual health education, HIV/AIDS outreach and testing, adolescent mentorship, leadership training, curriculum development, and research & evaluation services. Their programme initiatives are implemented based upon a trauma-informed approach while working with community organisations, public schools, higher education institutions, city and state government agencies, the juvenile justice system, and parish prisons.
The HERON team is planning to fundraise for our various community partners at upcoming HERON events. Please contact the HERON Team if we can help raising awareness about your community organisation and assist in fundraising efforts.
